 Heading the Cross

Most injuries involving the head in soccer are caused by head contact with other objects and not by the impact of the soccer ball. This contact can be:

  • player to player
  • player to ground
  • player to goalpost
  • player to ball
  • player to equipment

Read the Journal of American Medicine Reports and learn about the hazards of heading a soccer ball.

Purpose: To develop crossing and general heading skills.

Procedure: Four defenders play three attackers: they are all restricted to the penalty box, which does not have a goalkeeper. Outside the box five attackers play against three defenders with the restriction that these eight players are not allowed in the box. The five attackers play possession soccer and try to set up crosses from varied positions into the box for their three team-mates to score with headers, while defenders to to clear the ball through one of the two small goals at the end of the field. The number of players can be altered depending on whether the coach wishes to emphasize attacking or defensive heading, or put more pressure on the crossers.

Development: (a) Count the number of headed goals or successful clearances. (b) The coach can condition the game so that wingers must play first-time crosses.
