 Heading the Cross

Most injuries involving the head in soccer are caused by head contact with other objects and not by the impact of the soccer ball. This contact can be:

  • player to player
  • player to ground
  • player to goalpost
  • player to ball
  • player to equipment

Read the Journal of American Medicine Reports and learn about the hazards of heading a soccer ball.

Purpose:To practice controlled heading techniques
Procedure: The squad splits up into small groups who compete against each other in an area 10X10 yards square. Players line up in two files facing each other, about 2 or 3 yards apart The first player tosses the ball up in the air and heads it to the first player on the opposite side, while moving in the direction of the ball to join the end of the far line and await his turn to head the ball again. The next player heads the ball to the man opposite him and moves to the back of that file, and so the sequence continues. The players keep the ball in the air with their heads only.

Development: (a) Count the total number of consecutive headers. (b) The coach can ask players to perform two successive headers before playing the ball to the next man. (c) A static player can stand between the files so that all headers have to be played over him.
