 Heading the Cross

Most injuries involving the head in soccer are caused by head contact with other objects and not by the impact of the soccer ball. This contact can be:

  • player to player
  • player to ground
  • player to goalpost
  • player to ball
  • player to equipment

Getting Started

One important skill every soccer player should know is how to head a soccer ball. Start with one or more players who each has their own Headball. ( if a Headball is not available, substitute a soft, lightweight ball) First, hold a ball in front of your face with both hands and gently tap the ball against your forehead a few times. You can also put a piece of masking tape on your forehead as a reminder. Keep your eyes open and your mouth closed. Try to make contact with the ball before it makes contact with you. Its normal for players to flinch and close there eyes on impact. As you gain confidence, hold the ball a little further away until your tossing the ball a foot or so over your head. Make sure your keeping your eyes open, your mouth closed and making contact with the ball right at the hair line. Count the number of hits you make and set your own personal record!

2 or more player

Start your drill with two people or players, use one ball, stand about 6 to 10 yards apart. Player with the ball (A), throws the ball underhand in the air above the head of the other player (B). Player (B) moves under the ball and makes contact with the ball squarely on the forehead (hair line). Make sure and follow the ball with your eyes all the way to your forehead. Player (B) then heads the ball up and back to Player (A) who then heads it back to Player (A). Don't forget your basics! Eyes open, Mouth shut and make solid contact with the ball right on the hair line. Count your number of repitions and set new goals and records each time you practice.
